Five to Thrive

Building Strong Foundations for Your Child’s Development

19 October 2026

October offers a wonderful opportunity to highlight the Five to Thrive model, a simple, evidence‑informed framework that helps parents and carers understand how everyday interactions support a baby’s brain development. Created by Kate Cairns Associates, Five to Thrive is used widely across early years, health and family support services, and its message aligns closely with Aspire’s commitment to nurturing relationships and strengthening family wellbeing.

At the heart of Five to Thrive is a clear idea: the way we connect with babies and young children shapes how their brains grow. Every smile, cuddle, conversation and moment of shared attention helps build the neural pathways that support learning, emotional regulation and resilience. These small, everyday interactions are not just comforting; they are biologically powerful.

The model is built around five simple actions that support healthy development.

  • Respond - Responding to your child shows them they are seen and valued.
  • Engage- Cuddling helps them feel safe and secure.
  • Relax - Relaxing together helps children learn to settle, rest and feel calm.
  • Play -Playing encourages curiosity, imagination and problem‑solving.
  • Talk - Talking builds language, communication and connection.

These actions work together, creating a rhythm of interaction that strengthens relationships and supports wellbeing for both children and adults.

Families appreciate most about Five to Thrive is its simplicity. It doesn’t require special equipment or complicated routines. It is about noticing the moments you already share with your child and understanding the impact they have. Whether you are reading a story, walking to nursery, preparing a meal or settling down at the end of the day, these small interactions help your child feel loved, safe and ready to learn.

Across Aspire’s centres, the Five to Thrive model sits gently within the way practitioners already work with families. It helps guide conversations about connection, comfort and the small moments that support a child’s development. Practitioners use the framework to highlight how everyday interactions: responding, cuddling, playing, talking and relaxing, strengthen relationships and help children feel secure. It also offers a simple way for parents to recognise the strengths they already bring to their child’s wellbeing, while creating space to talk openly about stress, balance and the importance of taking time to rest as a family.

Five to Thrive is a reminder that parenting is not about perfection. It is about connection. When families understand how powerful these everyday moments are, they often feel more confident, more supported and more able to enjoy the early years with their child.

As we move through October, we hope this gentle framework offers reassurance and inspiration. If you would like to learn more or explore how Five to Thrive can support your family, our teams are always here to help.
